The connection is Physics. Valente was a PhD physics student at Brown back in 2000 2001, and he attended the same academic program in Lisbon as the victim, Professor Loureiro, in the late 90s. It seems like a 25-year-old grudge. He even went back to the exact same engineering building at Brown where he used to have classes.
