California's SB 1047 AI safety bill is currently being debated in the state assembly. Legislators have until August 31 to pass it, and if approved, the Governor has until September 30 to sign it into law. This market will resolve to "Yes" if SB 1047 AI safety bill becomes law by September 30, 2024, 11:59 PM PT. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No." If the bill does not pass the state assembly by the end of their legislative session on August 31, this market will resolve to "No". Note that if the Governor vetoes the bill, the market will stay open until September 30 to allow for any potential overriding of the veto. If the bill doesn't pass by September 30, 2024, 11:59 PM PT this market will resolve to "No."

OpenAI is in the process of ditching all the safety precautions in their governance structure, not unsurprisingly after last year's board debacle.
The only problem for them is that the info leaked out before Newsom can take the new information into account.
The only actual comments we heard from Newsom were skeptical of the bill. He's also said that AI needs to be regulated on the federal level. There are pressure campaigns that make it not 100%, but the chances are higher for a veto than for a signature imo.
Also, Nancy Pelosi came out against the bill. Nancy tends to get what she wants
Think this is a lock in. Newsom has been all in on AI for the past few weeks. Yes imminent.
It's too late for SB 1047: When did Skynet become self-aware in Terminator? The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th.

Helen Toner, former OpenAI board member: "In public and policy conversations, talk of AGI is often treated as either a science-fiction pipe dream or a marketing ploy. Among the scientists and engineers of these companies, it is an entirely serious goal... ... The problem is, the same people expecting to build advanced AI in the coming years believe that doing so could be incredibly dangerous."
Hoping Newsom won't drop the ball on this.

You're joking right?

There's no way Newsom signs this. The bill would make AI companies liable for disasters caused by their models. There is no chance in hell any silicon valley tech company would be OK with this, and you'll be shocked to know that they're huge donors to Newsom.
This bill is much needed [link removed]
This is tough but I landed on no because CA just lost musk. They need (relatively) AI business in Silicon Valley. Less regulation=more money for them from tech comps.
Newsom will likely make the argument that a bill of this type should be proposed at the federal level. Specifically limiting CA-based companies in this regard could negatively impact the state's revenue.
This is probably 60-40. Not the best, but it's a gamble.
Lots of pressure on Newsom not to sign. I'm pretty sure he won't. The only question is whether the assembly overrides the veto
assembly hasn't overriden a veto in 40 years and it didn't pass with a veto-beating majority
The bill just got passed by the legislature: [link removed]

He doesn't need milk or a psychiatrist. He needs a shoulder to lean on, and I'm here for him.
SB 1047 promotes the safety of AI systems, making it a crucial step toward securing California's technological future. Approval by the state assembly before August 31 indicates a strong political will to pass the bill. If the Governor signs it, the bill will become law by September 30. Even if vetoed, the legislature could override the veto, ensuring the bill's enactment. Therefore, all indications suggest the market should resolve to "Yes" if SB 1047 becomes law by the deadline.
